Plastic waste has become a huge issue in South Korea over the past decade. Delivery food has come with more and more disposable plastic, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic.
We know we cannot solve this problem over night but it was our goal to partner with members of our school and local community to help make a difference in peoples behaviours.
SS4BC surveyed students at our school between grades 3 to 12 and discovered that over 90% of their families get food delivered at least once a month. We also learned that although 95% of students polled use metal utensils for home-cooked meals, 52% of those families use disposable utensils when they have food delivered! Shocking!
SS4BC asked students at CMIS to help change their family's habits and reduce the amount of plastic they used each day. Submissions to our photo collage showed many students took our cause seriously and helped to take their own small steps for big change!
Special thanks to our sponsors for this project Cafe Nanum and Spoon Kimbap!
SS4BC asked students and adults in our community to sign a petition which urged policy makers to take plastic waste more seriously and enforce a surcharge or tax on single use plastic utensils. Thank you all for your support!
